Kayaking Students on a Manta Ray II

What You Will Learn

Introduction to Coastal Kayaking

American Canoe Association (ACA) certified instructor, Jim Needham will teach the essential skills needed for kayaking in coastal waters. You will learn how to:

  • Maneuver your kayak forward, backwards, and sideways
  • Spin, turn, and stop your kayak
  • Identify and respond to possible hazards
  • Perform simple, effective rescue techniques

You will have the opportunity to practice your paddling skills during guided kayak tours in progressively more challenging venues – starting with the protected waters of the Laguna Madre on Day 1 and ending with a half-day excursion through Lighthouse Lakes on Day 3. To ensure your safety, ACA certified instructors and Red Cross certified lifeguards will be on the water with participants at all times.

Your adventure also will provide lots of opportunities to learn about the unique ecology, history, and lifestyle of the Texas coast – including a trip aboard A&M Research Vessel Wetland Explorer. You will be amazed at the number of colorful, coastal birds inhabiting our region. Corpus Christi is nationally recognized as the “Birdiest City.”
