English Literature - Dr. Randy Baker

  • Dr. Randy Baker, the lead instructor, has been teaching English for the past thirty-four years. A Nationally Board Certified Instructor, Dr. Baker has taught Pre-AP and AP for the past nineteen years and has been a national consultant for the College Board in Oklahoma , Texas , Arkansas , and Illinois . He conducted a workshop for experienced AP teachers at the National College Board Convention in Seattle last July. A reader for the AP English Literature Examination for the past nine years, Baker is a chairman of his English Department and has been his building Teacher of the Year in 1986 and 2006 at Putnam City North High School and the District Teacher of the Year also in 2006. He is a past member of the Oklahoma State Master Teacher Program and recently received his doctoral degree in English Education at the University of Oklahoma . In addition, he is also an adjunct at Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma City and St. Gregory's University in Shawnee , Oklahoma . Dr. Baker says that he loves to conduct Summer AP Institutes because he learns much more from the participants than they learn from him.

Dr. Baker's Homework Assignment: Each participant should bring 30 copies of a “best practice” lesson or unit to be presented on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

English Language - Kay Hammond

  • Ms. Kay Hammond has been teaching English courses for the past thirty-four years. She serves as the head of the Tuloso-Midway English Department as well as an AP Language examination grader. A former resident of upstate New York , she is a talented quilter, sewer, and cross-stitch artist. Ms. Hammond is also very lucky to be the loving grandmother of two darling boys.

Ms. Hammond's Homework Assignment: Each participant should read and bring their copy of The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Participants should also bring their calendar for the 2009 – 2010 school year along with four different colored highlighters.

Spanish Literature and Language - Santos Gutierrez

  • Dr. Sandy Gutierrez is a fourth generation Texan. She grew up in Houston and received her BA and M.Ed. from the University of Houston. She started teaching at 21 and has never stopped. She had 150 units beyond her Masters when she began her doctoral studies. She has been a teacher for 40 years at all levels from third grade through college. She taught her first class in 1968, and retired from full-time teaching in 2004, after 36 years in the classroom. She taught the AP Spanish Language course for 20 years and the AP Spanish Literature course for 14 years, 10 of those years via television distance learning to students throughout Fairfax County in the D.C. area. Sandy has received NEH summer grants from Georgetown University and from the University of Virginia. Sandy also received two Mellon grants for AP Spanish Institutes. In 2008, she received her Ph.D., her dissertation was entitled: GUILTY PLEASURES: CLASS, GENDER, CULTURE AND LIFE AS THEY ARE CONNECTED TO TELANOVELAS. Sandy has been an AP consultant for almost 10 years, leading many workshops and seminars for the College Board. She has been an AP Spanish Reader for ten years as well. She is currently at UTSA supervising foreign language student teachers and teaches a few classes on the side as well.

Dr. Gutierrez’s Homework Assignment: Participants should bring a favorite lesson or strategy that has worked well in the classroom, bring the books that you use in your own instruction, lastly participants should prepare a quick game used to energize students. Attendees will be put into small groups in which they will create a project designed to increase productivity and learning opportunities in the classroom.
Dr. Gutierrez has also recommended that participants bring a laptop computer and/or a flash drive to copy PowerPoint’s and quizzes as well as a 3” three-ring binder with dividers.

US History - Marsha Gray

She received her B.A. from North Texas State University and was awarded a Master of Liberal Arts from Southern Methodist University. In the past she was a Fulbright-Hays awardee in India and has been a recipient of the Landmarks in American History grant three times from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

  • Mr. John ( Leon ) Schram has been teaching mathematics and computer science since 1978 at several schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. He has taught AP Computer Science since 1983. He received his education at the University of Maryland , the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of North Texas , where he is currently working towards a Doctorate in Technology Education. He is the recipient of the Texas Excellence Award for Outstanding High School Teachers, the Texas Computer Educator of the Year Award, and the College Board Advanced Placement Special Recognition Award. He has also served on the College Board AP Computer Science Examination Development Committee. Additionally, Mr. Schram has been published in various volumes of the Preparation for the AP Computer Science Exams in Pascal, C++ and Exposure Java.
